Brookhaven National Laboratory News
Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies. Brookhaven also builds and operates major facilities available to university, industrial, and government scientists.
“Naturally Obsessed” Documentary Highlighting Brookhaven Lab to be Shown Dec. 10
A one-hour documentary on the trials and tribulations faced by aspiring scientists, filmed in part at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, will be shown at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, in the Lab’s Berkner Hall Auditorium.

Recital by Duo Prism at Brookhaven Lab, Dec. 10
Duo Prism, comprised of pianist Rieko Aizawa and violinist Jesse Mills, will perform in concert U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on December 10, at noon, in Berkner Hall. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public.
Drug-Related Preference In Cocaine Addiction Extends to Images
When given a choice between viewing pictures of cocaine and a variety of other images, cocaine addicted individuals, as compared to healthy, non-addicted research subjects, show a clear preference for the drug-related images.
‘Insight’ Deficit May Explain Denial in Drug Addiction
Drug abusers are often characterized as being in “denial” — not recognizing the severity of their disorder. Although “denial” is often considered to be a form of deception, emerging research suggests that it may be due to a specific brain dysfunction similar to that observed in other neuropsychiatric illnesses.
Michael Jazz Trio to perform at Brookhaven Lab December 12
The trio, all of whom hold a middle name of Michael, consists of 14-year-old Matthew on keyboard, 12-year-old David on alto and tenor sax, and 8-year-old Jordan on drums. The three were born and raised in Central Islip, New York. According to their parents, they were musically inclined at a young age and started sharing their musical talent by performing in front of local stores.
Hope for Treating Relapse to Methamphetamine Abuse
A new study at Brookhaven Lab suggests that vigabatrin (a.k.a. gamma vinyl-GABA, or GVG) blocks drug-seeking behavior in animals previously trained to associate methamphetamine with a particular environment. Specifically, animals pre-treated with vigabatrin lost interest in spending time in a location where they had previously been given methamphetamine.
Site Preparation Work To Begin For NSLS-II Facility's Ring Building
Site preparation work for construction of BNL's newest research facility, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), is set to begin next week, subject to approval of the contractor safety plan.
Electron Pairs Precede High-Temperature Superconductivity
Like astronomers tweaking images to gain a more detailed glimpse of distant stars, Brookhaven physicists have found ways to sharpen images of the energy spectra in high-temperature superconductors — materials that carry electrical current effortlessly when cooled below a certain temperature. These new imaging methods confirm that the electron pairs needed to carry current emerge above the transition temperature, before superconductivity sets in, but only in a particular direction.
Stony Brook University Student Wins Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship
Ning Zhang, a graduate student at Stony Brook University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has won the fourth annual Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship.
