Children Outdoors -- Building Bridges

Concerned that children are less engaged with the outside world today, Region 5's Angeles National Forest and the Southern California Consortium, an environmental education, outreach and recruitment program, are working with other agencies and organizations to change this situation and encourage kids to once again go out and play.

Transient Who Started 'Day Fire' That Burned 162,000 Acres Sentenced to Nearly Four Years in Prison

A transient who started the 2006 Day Fire that burned more than 162,000 acres - most of which was in the Los Padres National Forest - and cost authorities more than $100 million in fire suppression costs was sentenced today to 45 months in federal prison.

National Smokejumpers Association Clear Trails and Tell Tales in the Granite Chief Wilderness

Six ex-smokejumpers from the National Smokejumpers Association spent 5 days clearing the Western States Trail in the Granite Chief Wilderness in the Tahoe National Forest -- using cross cut saws to remove downed trees and completing other trail maintenance needs in Picayune Valley this past fall. Ranging in age from early fifties to mid seventies, this group served with the Forest Service from the 1940's to the recent past and now spends time each summer volunteering on projects in the National Forests.

Public Outreach For Proposed Release of Strawberry Guava Biocontrol Agent

Pacific Southwest Research scientists with the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry submitted a proposal to release a Brazilian insect to control the spread of strawberry guava, a South American tree that has invaded native Hawaiian ecosystems since it was introduced in 1825 as a garden plant.

Suspect Admits to Starting Fires near Mendocino National Forest

In the afternoon of August 22, a fire was reported on private timber land near the Mendocino National Forest, Mendocino County, within a U.S. Forest Service protection area. During a series of water drops, a helicopter pilot observed a man dressed in camouflage, lean over and start a fire.

Wilderness Partners Awarded National Forest Foundation Grants

Region 5 received 4 out of 15 National Forest Foundation Stewardship Award Grants for 2008. Forests with partners in these grants include the Los Padres, Inyo, Mendocino, Sierra, Sequoia, Stanislaus, Plumas and Modoc National Forests.

Los Padres ROP Fire Science Program Gets Good Marks

The Los Padres National Forest, Mt. Pinos Ranger District, has participated in the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Fire Science Program for the past nine years. The 180-hour course is designed to introduce students to the Forest Service and equip them with basic firefighting and leadership skills.
