The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a federal government agency created by the White House and Congress in 1970, in response to growing public demand for cleaner water, air and land. The Environmental Protection Agency is the principal agency of the United States Government charged with implementing federal environmental laws. EPA is the primary federal agency in charge of creating and enforcing regulations that put environmental laws into practice ans is the government department leading environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts. EPA programs include water, air, pesticides, pollution prevention, toxics and chemicals and wastes and recycling.  EPA is also a part of the government-wide National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), which provides coordination and direction for this emerging field.
