FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. FEMA is the short name or acronym for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA is one of the four main components of Department of Health and Human Services, with over 2,000 full time employees and 5,000 reserves. FEMA is tasked with responding to, planning for, recovering from and mitigating against disasters, both natural and man-made. Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Charged with coordinating 22 different federal agencies as part of the Federal Response Plan to disasters, FEMA is elevated to a Cabinet-level status in 1996 by President Clinton.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has activated procedures under its transitional sheltering initiative that allows eligible Gustav evacuees who cannot return to their homes to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home. FEMA will pay for the lodging through the use of an authorization system directly to hotels and motels. A list of participating hotels is available online at www.gustav-evac.com.
