FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. FEMA is the short name or acronym for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA is one of the four main components of Department of Health and Human Services, with over 2,000 full time employees and 5,000 reserves. Charged with coordinating 22 different federal agencies as part of the Federal Response Plan to disasters, FEMA is elevated to a Cabinet-level status in 1996 by President Clinton.
