The Federal Election Commission is charged with making sure that the Federal Election Campaign Act is obeyed. The FEC is an independent regulatory agency charged with administering and enforcing federal campaign finance law which includes monitoring and reporting of campaign contributions. The Federal Election Commission was created by Congress in 1975 to disclose campaign finance information; to enforce the limits, prohibitions and other provisions of the election laws; and to administer the public funding of presidential elections. The FEC was created as an outgrowth of the Watergate scandal that occurred during the presidency of Richard M. Nixon.
