The United States Forest Service is an agency of the Department of Agriculture that manages National Forest System lands for multiple use purposes and protection of the forest resources. The United States Forest Service is the steward of more than 8 percent of the country's landmass: 191 million acres in 156 national forests.The Service is the leading provider of outdoor recreation in the world and has a long history of involvement in resource based tourism. The Forest Service was created in 1905 from the existing forest reserve system which had been developed to combat abusive forest practices at the end of the nineteenth century. Smokey Bear, mascot of the US Forest Service is based on an actual black bear cub found in New Mexico, ironically after a forest fire.
