The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was created in 1934 and is the federal agency responsible for national policy and programs that address the housing needs of Americans, improve and develop the Nation's communities, and enforce fair housing laws. HUD is committed to increasing homeownership, particularly among minorities, creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans, supporting the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is a division within HUD that issues mortgage loan insurance to assist in the purchase or refinance of homes.

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of very low-income senior citizens will have access to affordable supportive housing thanks to $31.5 million in housing assistance announced today by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). WASHINGTON - A rental assistance program that temporarily housed nearly 20,000 families who were displaced by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav in 2008 officially ends today with only 3,500 households still enrolled in the program.
