International relations is one branch of the wider discipline of political science. It involves the study and dynamics of foreign affairs and issues among the nations of the world. This is a highly complex task, given that there are about 195 countries in the world and many times that number of non-governmental organizations and other players(such as multinational corporations) that interact across the globe, each seeking to enhance and further their own interests. Events, alliances, partnerships, adversarial relationships, cultures, and business are always in a constant state of change.  The study and practical application of international relations involves the application of many fields such as history, law, economics, sociology, psychology, cultural studies, philosophy and many more. IR is a critical component of daily world affairs and the maintenance of world peace and stability.
