Del Shay Perscribed Burn

The Tonto National Forest began a prescribed burn near Roosevelt Lake in central Arizona today. The Del Shay Prescribed Burn is seven miles northeast of the town of Punkin Center. The prescribed fire is designed to reduce the potential for large, catastrophic wildfires by targeting decadent stands of brush throughout the 17,000-acre project area. The goal is to treat 3,500 acres per year over the next several years.

Forest Service partners with Arizona Big 5 Sporting Goods to sell Christmas tree-cutting tags

Forest officials announced today that the decades-old annual drawing for a Christmas tree-cutting tag on Arizona national forests has been completely eliminated, replaced by over-the-counter tag sales at selected Big 5 Sporting Goods stores, beginning Friday, October 10.

Tonto and Coconino national forests announce temporary Fossil Creek area closures

Payson Ariz.(August 13, 2008) Due to continuing de-construction efforts on the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric facilities, a temporary closure of Fossil Springs and Fossil Creek on the Tonto and Coconino national forests will be in effect from Monday, August 18, 2008 through Saturday, February 28, 2009 (unless terminated sooner).

The project begins approximately one mile east (milepost (MP) 213.1) of the intersection of US 60 and SR79 at Florence Junction and extends east to just beyond the Queen Creek Bridge at MP 222.7. Roadway improvements on this ten mile portion of scenic highway through the Tonto National Forest will include: existing roadway widening, new roadway sections, drainage features, bridge structures, guard rail, fencing, paving, salvaging and replanting cacti and other work.

ADOT’s repair of State Route 87 embankment requires night time closures

PHOENIX: The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close State Route 87 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, Wednesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 24 in order to accelerate the repair of embankments in the Slate Creek area following a landslide that occurred earlier this year. Note: the road will be re-opened each morning at 6 a.m.

Landslide requires State Route 87 to be closed for emergency repairs

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has closed State Route 87 after ADOT crews discovered a landslide between Phoenix and Payson. The landslide is occurring in the Slate Creek area between Sunflower and Rye, which is causing buckling in the highway pavement at milepost 224.

Schoolhouse Recreation site at Roosevelt Lake closed until further notice

Tonto National Forest, June 27, 2007 -- Schoolhouse Recreation Site, located on the Tonto National Forest 11 miles east of the historic Roosevelt Dam on State Route 188, is closed until further notice. Because of the receding lake water levels, it is no longer safe to launch a boat at this site. The closure includes the campgrounds located near the launch ramp. ADOT Advisory: Work on Apache Trail to restrict and delay traffic during June and July

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will be performing work the week of June 18 on State Route 88 (Apache Trail) that will require closure of the road and will result in delays of up to 2 ½ hours. Crews will be doing geotechnical testing of the retaining walls along the Fish Creek Hill section (milepost 222). Additional work will be done the week of July 9 that will result in delays of up to 30 minutes. ADOT appreciates the public’s patience and understanding during this necessary work. TONTO BASIN (February 14, 2007) - The Tonto Basin Ranger District is initiating an environmental analysis (EA) on the Greenback grazing allotment, located in the Sierra Ancha Mountains east of Punkin Center. The purpose of the analysis is to develop an allotment management plan that is consistent with the Tonto National Forest Land Management Plan, as amended, and other resource objectives on the Greenback allotment.

National Forest/Grassland Visitor Maps Price Increase in February

Albuquerque, NM (February 1, 2007) - Effective February 28, 2007, the price of National Forest/Grassland Visitor Maps will increase to $9.00 for paper and $10.00 for plastic maps. Currently, these maps are sold for $6.00 (paper) and $7.00 (plastic). The last time National Forest/Grassland Visitor map prices were raised was in May 2000.

PAYSON (November 29, 2006) - Continuing de-construction efforts on the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric facilities have prompted an extension of the closure affecting Forest Road 708 (Fossil Creek Road). The closure, requested by Arizona Public Service (APS), began October 30, 2006 and will now run through December 31, 2006, Monday through Friday.

(September 27, 2006) -- Three newly-improved and developed recreation facilities, all part of the Timber Camp Recreation Site on the Tonto National Forest near Globe, will open in October. Tonto National Forest to Implement Recreation Pass Program

PHOENIX (September 13, 2006) – On October 2, the Tonto Pass Program will be implemented, replacing automated fee collection machines on the forest. “This new daily-use recreation pass program will change the way visitors purchase recreation passes to visit over 50 recreation sites located on the forest near the Phoenix metropolitan area,” said Delvin Lopez, Public Service Group Leader. “A forest team spent the last year studying how to better serve our recreation visitors with increased customer convenience and reduced program costs.”

Tonto National Forest officials have been notified that the roads to Bartlett Dam and Horseshoe Dam, and their lakes, closed due to recent heavy storm damage, have now been re-opened. "Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) crews worked extra long hours to get the roadways open for people hoping to use the lakes for Labor Day Weekend activities," said Roger Ball, Maricopa County Department of Transportation Public Information Officer.
